Why Choose the Lorena School of Engineering (EEL)?
The Lorena School of Engineering (EEL) is the only unit of the University of São Paulo(USP) in the Paraíba Valley in the State of São Paulo, a region of intense industrial activity in the areas of technology, covering virtually all engineering fields. The region is also very active regarding education, with excellent universities in different areas of knowledge, as well as excellent technical schools. The EEL has two campi equipped with teaching and research labs, multimedia didactical labs, updated libraries linked to the "Integrated Library System USP". Also, the institution has Masters Programs (Materials Engineering, Industrial Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering and Projects Educational Science) and Ph.D. programs (Materials Engineering and Industrial Biotechnology), providing students with an adequate and stimulating learning environment.
The city of Lorena is at approximately 200 km from the two largest and most important Brazilian cities, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Within a radius of 100 km from Lorena, the region is one of the most industrialized in Brazil, with internationally renowned companies such as Embraer, Petrobras, National Steel Company (CSN), Volkswagen, GM, Renault, BASF, AGC, Dow Chemical, Johnson & Johnson, among others. Moreover, two important research centers in Brazil are in the region: the Institute for Space Research (INPE) and the Aerospace Technological Center (CTA).
Our academic year is divided into two semesters, the first from February to June and the second from August to December.
Food and Lodging
The EEL-USP does not offer dorms or student accommodation; the students themselves must pay for their housing expenses in Brazil. However, Lorena offers good options of accommodation with very affordable rents.
There is also the possibility to share houses or apartments with other students in order to reduce costs. Brazilian students are very receptive to colleagues from abroad. However, the exchange students must search and find his own accommodation, according to their interests and financial conditions.
EEL runs a low cost restaurant, which serves lunch and dinner during the week. Any regularly registered student may apply for food assistance, which consists in the exemption to pay for meals in university restaurants.
EEL does not hold Portuguese classes for foreign students on its campus. This type of course is offered in the city of São Paulo, distant about 170 km or about 3 hours by bus / car from Lorena. In Lorena it is also possible to find personal teachers to have Portuguese classes, with affordable fees.
Proficiency tests are not required by EEL-USP, but candidates are expected to have a good level of understanding of Portuguese, since all classes are taught in this language.
The only officially recognized examination of Portuguese as a foreign language is Celpe-Bras - Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners. Further information can be obtained through the website http://portal.inep.gov.br/celpebras
